Today we’re going to talk about reversed cards in a spread. When a Tarot card appears reversed in a spread, that is, upside down relative to the normal position of observation, it can have multiple meanings, deepening and enriching the interpretation of the Tarot in ways that reflect the complexity of life and human experiences. These meanings can vary depending on the reader, the context of the spread, and, of course, the specific card that appears reversed. Here, I share some general interpretations and how this connects with deeper and esoteric perspectives:

Blocked or repressed energy. The reversal of a card can symbolize that the energy or quality that the card represents is present but blocked or not being expressed in a healthy or effective way. For example, a card that normally represents action could suggest stagnation or indecision when it appears reversed.

Internal aspects. Reversed cards often signal inward, indicating that the lessons, challenges, or messages of the card are happening within the querent rather than manifesting in the external world. This may be particularly relevant to your interest in Jungian psychology, as it may indicate the presence of shadows, repressed or unrecognized aspects of the self.

Delayed or future potentialities. Some interpretations suggest that a reversed card can indicate that the energies of the card are in a latent state, waiting to be awakened or that they will manifest more fully in the future. This approach can be especially useful in readings focused on personal or spiritual development.

Opportunities for inner growth. From an esoteric and shamanistic perspective, reversed cards can be seen as an invitation to look beyond external appearances and find wisdom and guidance in challenges and obstacles. This aligns with the idea that the most difficult moments offer the greatest opportunities for soul growth.

Opposite or altered meanings. In some systems of interpretation, the reversed card may take on an opposite or significantly altered meaning to its upright position. However, this is a simplistic approach and may not capture the entirety of what the card is trying to communicate.

To integrate these interpretations effectively into a reading, it’s crucial to develop a personal and deep relationship with the Tarot cards, reflecting on how their messages resonate with your own intuition and life experience. Each reversed card is an opportunity to explore the complexities of the human psyche and the universe, inviting you to a richer understanding of your spiritual and creative journey.
