“When I went out to do shows on my own, I was amazed people were coming to see me.”

Harry Styles – Pluto in the 2nd House

The Meaning of Pluto

Pluto rules Scorpio. Scorpio has three states as symbolism: the Scorpion, the Eagle, and the Phoenix. The first state, the Scorpion, represents instinctual reaction. When scorpions feel in danger, they defend themselves with their stinger. The second state, the Eagle, represents the ability to form a strategy, since flying and seeing the world from a broader point of view allows the eagles to know where to go to avoid obstacles or obtain what they need. The Phoenix, the third state, symbolizes rebirth. The Phoenix does not react instinctively like the scorpion, nor does it use strategies like the eagle. The Phoenix totally surrenders to Life. And so, it is reborn.

Unlike Scorpio, Pluto is the planet that symbolizes the activation of this process while Scorpio represents the process itself. The position of Pluto in the birth chart shows us the area of life where instinctual reactions (Scorpio) will awaken when we feel in danger. These reactions are not only the product of our personal memories, but also of the ancestral memories that are transmitted through DNA. Some astrologers mention that we also speak of reactions that come from the experiences of our soul, memories of past or future lives. Likewise, this is the space where we will tend to develop a strategy for survival (Eagle) until finally, we allow ourselves to feel EVERYTHING and lose our fear of vulnerability. It is then when the experiences we go through transform us into a new version of ourselves (Phoenix).

Pluto describes these states both individually and collectively. This is a planet that moves very slowly: it takes 248 years to travel the zodiacal wheel and stays in each sign between 12 and 31 years. Each generation goes through these states and this is how the human species expands through time.

Although I will refer to the position of Pluto, this article can also be applied to the position of Scorpio at home.

When Pluto is in the 2nd House

The Transformation of Our Personal Values

The 2nd House corresponds to the personal resources that we have to navigate reality. Here we can see the innate capacities that an individual possesses to create material security. By analogy, this house describes self-esteem, personal worth and the relationship that one has with the material aspects of existence.

How the three archetypal states of Scorpio manifest will always be an individual process. The position by sign of Pluto, the aspects and other relevant positions that we can see in the birth chart will give us more details. What follows is the general energy of each archetype.

When Pluto is in this house, the individual evolutionary process goes through the transformation of values. The first state of consciousness symbolized by Pluto is that of instinctual reactions (the scorpion) that are activated every time our material security is in danger. As I said above, our DNA runs the ancestral memories that contain memories of poverty, inability to get what is needed, lack of personal resources, hunger … Every time we feel materially insecure, these memories are activated and awaken our survival instinct. The way we react varies from person to person, however, it must be remembered that when the scorpion is scared, it defends itself with its venom.

The second state is that of strategy as a personal resource. Here we stop feeling predated by material reality and start seeking our material security like an eagle. We are able to see where and how to obtain what we need for subsistence. We look for deals and learn to save, we have the ability to see market vulnerabilities and take advantage of financial opportunities. We are dedicated to creating an economic base that can even turn into fortune. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have this position, for example. While in the scorpion state we react to circumstances, in the eagle state we see them coming and act accordingly. In any case, here we see individuals capable of providing themselves with what they need, with a great vision for opportunities.

The third and final state is that of the transformation of personal worth. When, for some reason, we have no choice but to face the fear of not being able to sustain ourselves materially, it is when we have the opportunity to feel the emotions that have controlled us or that we have controlled during all this time. Within us there is a stress that contains pain and fear of poverty. This is the same stress that has kept us on constant alert or helped us build fortunes. However, it is necessary to let yourself be traversed by this fear, as it will open the floodgates to an inner truth that has much to tell us. Within us there is the wealth that our ancestors have accumulated through the centuries: the development of capacities that today seem to be natural in us and that exist thanks to the talents that our ancestors have developed through time and circumstances. This is how we begin to value our capabilities in another way, and using them becomes an act of love. And perhaps, when we see pigeons so diligently and gracefully gathering twigs to build a nest, it makes us want to share our bread with them, no longer afraid of being left with nothing, because after all, life can be hard for everyone. This is the archetype of the Phoenix, which has transformed our being.
